Our Team

Galway City Medical Centre is a city centre based practice of male and female Family Doctors. Treating patients for over 50 years, established originally by Dr Michael O’ Flaherty, the medical team here now includes Dr Michael’s son, Dr Colm O Flaherty, Dr John Lally and Dr Ruth Smith  We are a teaching practice and are involved in training young doctors both undergraduate and post graduates as part of GP training.  Our practice is based on the ground floor, with wheelchair access, a large child friendly waiting area and baby changing facilities. The upper floors are currently occupied with consultant clinics including Prof Kieran Daly, Consultant Cardiologist. The GPs at Galway City Medical Centre are available for appointments between 9am and 5 pm from Monday to Friday but 24 hour emergency access to a doctor is provided for all our registered patients. During weekends and bank holidays, our patients are seen in the Bons Secours hospital, Renmore, by the doctor on call ( Citydoc). This emergency service is free of charge to medical card patients registered with us.

  • Dr Lally is a  graduate of National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) .
  • Graduated in 2000, internship Merlin Park Hospital, Galway; General and Renal Medicine and General Surgery in Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar.
  • He then spent a year in Queensland, Australia working in Emergency and Cancer Medicine.
  • On return in 2001, he started the Western Vocational Training scheme in General practice and rotated between hospital specialties for 2 years including Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry, General and Renal Medicine in Galway, Ballinasloe and Roscommon. He trained in General practice in Roscommon with Dr John Keenan and Dr Claire Quinn before joining Dr Colm O’ Flaherty in 2004.
  • He has specific interests in Paediatrics, Obstetrics/ Family Planning including Mirena and Implanon Insertions/ Removals, Minor Surgery, Travel Medicine, Sports Medicine / Nutrition/ Weight loss.
  • Dr Lally is very involved with GP education and is an ICGP CME Tutor for Galway based GPs and GP Trainer to GPs finishing their training.

Post Graduate qualificiations include;
Diploma in Womens Health ( DOWH), Royal College of Physicians, Ireland.
Diploma in Child Health ( DCH), Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland
Certificate in Family Planning with training in insertion of Mirena Coil and Implanon.
Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP) and is on the specialist register of the Irish Medical Council in General Practice.

He is a registered smeartaker with the National Cervival Screening Programme  (www.cervicalcheck.ie)  

Chairman of the Galway Faculty of the Irish College of General Practitioners 2006-2010.

Current ICGP CME Tutor and  ICGP GP Trainer with the Western GP Training Scheme.

Dr Ruth Smith;

MB, BCh., BAO, MICGP, DCH, DOWH, Certificate Family Planning

Ruth graduated 1995 from NUI Galway. She did her GP training in Galway from 1999 – 2002.

Post Graduate qualificiations include;
Diploma in Womens Health (DOWH), Royal College of Physicians, Ireland.
Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland
Certificate in Family Planning with training in insertion of Mirena Coil and Implanon

Dr Kilian Tuite, GP Registrar

MB, BCh., BAO, MRCPI, MICGP, MSc (Sports Med)

Post Graduate qualificiations include; 

Kilian graduated from UCD in 2015, before completing his intern year between St. James’ Hospital, Dublin and St. Luke’s, Kilkenny. He subsequently spent 3 years in Perth, Western Australia, primarily working in Emergency Medicine. He returned to Ireland in 2019 and commenced the Western GP training scheme.

He has an interest in acute adult medicine, sports medicine as well as paediatrics.  He has completed the MRCPI as well as MICGP examinations, and is currently undertaking a diploma in paediatrics. Post graduate qualifications include

  • MRCPI (Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland)
  • MICGP (Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners)
  • Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine

 

Sarah O’Flaherty; Nurse and Practice Manager

Practice Nurse and Manager. Sarah trained in nursing in Galway University Hospital with special interests in midwifery. She has achieved extra training in General Practice management and is in an integral part of the medical and administrative team.  In addition to her clinical role, Sarah manages much of the work of each of the doctors and ensures patients receive adequate follow up, This often includes ensuring patients are offered their full vaccine/ immunisation schedule, obtain their smear results and histology reports and bring them to the attention of the doctors when appropriate.
